A Furniture Piece Speaking Out for Equality

Design has always been a powerful tool for social commentary, and Emanuele Di Bacco's latest creation, aptly named "It's a Metaphor," is no exception. This unique table design combines functionality with a strong message about gender equality, using irony and humor to provoke thought and spark conversations.

The inspiration for this design comes from the world of sumo, one of the most male-dominated sports in Japanese society. Di Bacco aims to shed light on the sexist rules that prevent women from competing professionally in this sport. These rules stem from the belief that women are "impure" due to their menstrual blood, which excludes them from the wrestling ring and perpetuates a macho dominance.

With "It's a Metaphor," Di Bacco challenges this discriminatory thinking by placing a sumo warrior in a submissive position, willingly serving as a platform for a flower pot or any other need people may have. This ironic juxtaposition desecrates the traditional notions of male dominance and highlights the need for a more inclusive and equal society.

What sets this table design apart is its ability to communicate and provoke. The piece itself is a furniture product that can speak to people, challenging unethical behaviors and promoting social change. Technologically, "It's a Metaphor" is realized through 3D printing. The structure is divided into multiple parts, which are then hand-refined and assembled. The entire body is glazed and finished with a vitreous enamel coating. A round tempered glass is placed on top, secured with discreet clear glass high-grip bumpers.

With dimensions of 850mm width, 750mm height, and 1000mm depth, this table can comfortably accommodate up to 10 seaters. It is a versatile piece that can be placed in any setting where an open-minded spirit is embraced.

The project started in December 2019 in London and was completed in February 2020. Currently, "It's a Metaphor" exists as a unique prototype, with plans for serial production and launch in May 2020.
